September 21-22 will be yet another busy weekend for Team Envol with Ötillö 1000 Lakes in Germany, Swimrun de Belle-Ile in France and Ödyssey Orcas Island in the US.
We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce one of the newest Team Envol members, Robin Lyon who is participating in her very first swimrun event on Sunday:
Tell us briefly about yourself.
I am 48 yrs old, proud mother of two teenage boys, and I work part time as an office Administrative Coordinator and then I also coach athletes for different multisport and fitness events.
Ödyssey Orcas Island is your first swimrun. What pushed you to register for this race?
After taking a break from racing triathlon for 20+ years, I wanted to find a new type of endurance racing that involved swimming (because that is my favorite!) and I started learning about it through a few friends and through social media. I have a lot of crazy friends who like to do epic things so we typically collaborate on the next fitness challenge. Orcas Island and Ötillö Catalina is what we came up with!
Now that you have only a few days before the start, how do you feel about it?
I am thrilled beyond words, and nervous at the same time. I am always willing to take on a physical challenge but the mental challenge is what fuels me to be a stronger person. For me, life is about getting out of your comfort zone, building character, and becoming a better person thorugh each experience. You put me outside in nature, doing physical activity, and competing, and I am happy as a clam.
What is the biggest challenge you are facing this weekend?
Without a doubt, my biggest challenge is not freezing to death. I live in Arizona, one of the warmest climates in the world, and probably the warmest in the United States, so although I am able to race the distances, I do not have the ability to train in similar water temps.
How did you find out about swimrun in general?
A few places… a friend/client who wanted to do one of the Breca series in England so I coached her for that event. That got me doing research on the different swimrun opportunities around the globe. Also, I get Triathlete magazine and saw Odyssey advertise their series right inside the front cover. Finally, my fitness connections on social media led me learn about the Ötillö series.
Team Envol in Arizona? How do you see that evolving?
I am confident that Team Envol has a place in Arizona and the entire southwestern United States. The endurance racing community here in Arizona is huge, and a lot of that is due to our ability to train outside yearround. There are so many like-minded people here willing to try new things and who have passion of multisport events. I’d love to bring these people together and grow swimrun in a positive environment through group workouts, coaching, and social gatherings.
